The idea that a developing baby in the womb has the capacity to communicate has fascinated people from the beginning of time. To many moms, this communication is one of the special gifts of motherhood.
The moms who provided their stories believe this communication is preparation for them to become a mother. In some cases, the ‘dialogue’ brings sad news but in many cases, babies in the womb are actively showing their mother their personality, connecting with how she feels that day, and even giving her encouragement during the pregnancy. Researchers report that babies can recognize their father’s voice from 32 weeks gestation and hear sounds from 16 weeks gestation.

Pre-birth communication gives moms a heads-up on their baby’s wants and needs before and after birth.
In a 2021 study babies that were talked to for two minutes touched their faces and increased sucking behaviors compared to those that didn’t. Results were seen directly on ultrasound.
